swedish wallpaper...

 The design for our new house, Patina Farm, is a melding of antique and modern. Most of the architectural details will feel contemporary: no trim, sheets of glass, white plaster walls, while the materials will be antique: antique French roof tiles, aged limestone flooring, French white oak floors. The modern details will be a calm backdrop for the antique elements, which will add romance and warmth.

 Although almost all of the walls will be white plaster, I'm toying with the idea of hanging some Swedish wallpaper in a small arched area in the entry.  This beautiful dining room by David Easton (originally featured in Veranda Magazine, photographed by Laura Resen) was my inspiration.

 I first became an admirer of muted Swedish wallpaper when I started shopping at Lief on Almont many years ago. 

 

 During a recent visit to Eleish Van Breems on Dering Hall, my heart started doing a little dance when I saw the work of Stockholm artist Eva Badenhorst. 

 

Eva creates these stunning wall decorations on antique Swedish sailcloth. 

 

 This design is the one I'm obsessing over. The muted colors will work perfectly in our new house.

souvenir magazine and accessories at giannetti home...

A few months ago my friend Hope Wallace Karney asked me to be a contributor to a new online magazine.  Souvenir Magazine is the latest creative endeavor of Heather Bullard, the multi-talented contributing editor of Country Living Magazine, stylist, etc, etc...

Oh, and did I mention that my hens are jealous of her coop...

 

Hope is now the art director and graphic designer for Souvenir! Congratulations, Hope! 

I'm thrilled to introduce Souvenir Magazine to you!

 

I know you will find the first issue of Souvenir as inspiring as I do!

The features are filled with authentic, creative ways to welcome Spring into your home. 

In this issue of Souvenir, I was asked to share a few of my favorite accessories. I have to admit that it was difficult to narrow it down!

So, in honor of Souvenir, I thought I would share some of the latest accessories at Giannetti Home and the displays created by Kate Burger of K8 Vision...

 

Vintage brown bottles, filled with Springtime flowers are mixed with mismatched votive holders and wood stools.

 

More bouquets found a home amongst our Linneas Lights candles and willow serving plates and chargers....

 

 

These bright, simple bouquets add a bit of  Spring to any vignette!

 

Amethyst is one of my favorite accent colors...

 

 

The shop is filled with the  heavenly scent of  Barr Co. bath and home products.

 

Of course, you can always find volumes of leather books on the shelves...

 

and stacks of vintage luggage.

 

I have a soft spot for baskets, that add beautiful texture around the shop.

 

I am constantly inspired by the design books the fill the shelves of our antique French cabinet. 

 

Of course, you can always spot a little gold around Giannetti Home, in the form of African brass beads...

 

or crusty architectural elements.

The bedding will be simple Libeco linen in sky and navy blue.  The wall will be painted a chalky blue to match the bedding.

plaster walls in the bathroom...

 

Before I start this post, I want to thank all of you who left beautiful, supportive comments and sent me personal emails about my last post on our home in Santa Monica being for sale.  Your support helped our whole family get through a very emotional week!

When collecting images that I love, I like to analyze them as a group to see if there are any design elements that show up in the majority of them.

I've started to realize that I should also look for the absence of elements as well...

For example, in all of these bathrooms and powder rooms there is no stone or tile on the walls.

Occassionally they have paneled walls...

but most of these rooms have beautiful, luminescent plaster walls.

The lack of stone and tile adds to the collected look that I am drawn to.

I  started to find images of showers that were also simply plastered.

These showers felt less separated from the rest of the bathroom.

Although many of my images show dark plaster walls, a lighter color can be used quite successfully.

Steve and I like this as an option for our bathroom at Patina Farm. 

 

We have started this discussion with our contractor, who has used sealed stucco in several bathrooms. This would allow us to continue the shower wall to the outside in the garden, but I'm concerned the walls won't have the depth of plaster. 

I've also spoken to several people about a Morroccan plaster called Tadelakt. It definitely has the texture that I'm looking for.
