Last week I wrote a post that included some of the inspirational images for our client's modern Italian villa. Today I'd like to share with you the next step in our design process...
Once we've filled our heads with beautiful imagery, Steve and I spend some time talking about different details that we want to include in our client's home. Then Steve loses himself in the world of his drawings for a few days.
Here are a couple of Steve's first preliminary sketches. A roof made from authentic Italian tiles and a combination of wood and steel windows will add some rustic elements to the clean modern exterior.
Three carriage garage doors are located on the side of the house under a trellised balcony.
A covered porch and a breakfast room with glass walls take full advantage of the view of the back yard.
The entry of the house will feel like an Italian courtyard, with a limestone floor and plaster walls. Overhead, a lantern hangs from a vaulted ceiling.
The two story stairway is illuminated by a large sky light.
To the right of the entry, the living and dining room are combined to create one larger space. This will provide our client with the option of creating a larger dining area for holidays and special occasions.
A tall limestone fireplace is flanked on both sides by bookshelves in the thick plaster wall. Simple linen draperies hang on a thin iron rod above the steel windows.
The wood ceiling will add warmth to the tall room.
In the back of the house, the modern kitchen is open to the family room.
The family room has a view of the greenery in the backyard.
The counter and the sides of the kitchen island are covered with stone. Open shelves provide storage in front of steel windows. Because there are no upper cabinets, the kitchen has a wonderful view of the pool beyond the breakfast room.
Under a plaster hood copper pots hang above the oven.
While Steve is drawing, I spend my time gathering more images, fabrics, materials, and spec. sheets. I collect my inspiration on a board in the office.
Most of the pieces that I collect are really place holders until final decisions are made. Their purpose to create a look and feel for the project. A small piece of oil rubbed bronze represents a finish option for the door hardware....
A limestone fireplace and vessel from Formations add some rustic elements to the design.
I included a few images with the right color scheme and "modern rustic" aesthetic (images via Veranda)
A few fabric swatches in green, camel, and chocolate brown start to bring the color scheme to life.
In front of the inspiration board, I stack leather and parchment books to convey the perfect aged patina.
Wood and tile samples are also included....
as well as more fabric swatches, natural woven rug samples, and limestone pieces.
I'd love to hear what you think of our client's modern Italian villa design so far. I look forward to sharing this design journey with you!
