When Steve and I start a project our goal is not just to design a beautiful home. Even more importantly, we want to create a home where our clients are comfortable. We also want our clients to feel like their home reflects their personality.
When we started working with Blake and Beth, their house was beautiful but it was devoid of any evidence of their interests and passions.
One of the first rooms that Blake and Beth wanted us to work on was their family/game room. On our first visit this is what their game room looked like.
Blake wanted to create a room with a pool table where the entire family could hang out with friend. Because they love neutrals, we selected a gray felt pool table and added a Luxe Silver Topaz rug by Merida.
Blake's vintage sheet music (Blake is a composer),
these framed vintage music note flash cards, and the concept of creating a family game room became the inspiration for the objects that we would display on the shelves.
We started collecting unique items: a jar filled with billiard balls, vintage musical instruments, red gear molds for interest and color, old leather books for warmth...
vintage game boards and carnival wheels, a jar filled with colorful dice, and aged wood bowling pins were just some of the items we found.
Once the table was filled, it was time to pack everything up and head over to Blake and Beth's home.
All of the items added a playfulness to the space.
Little by little, the space started to look like the game room that they envisioned.
This large carnival wheel and...
this vintage Chinese Checker Board became colorful focal points on the shelves.
A pair of natural linen barstools paired with an industrial bar table created a cozy hang out by the window. The natural woven shade add visual height to the french doors.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the room....
We needed to warm up the family room!
Another Luxe Silver Topaz Rug grounds the space.
We kept the objects on this side of the room more neutral so they wouldn't distract any television watchers.
Aged leather books and tarnished mercury bottles add unique interest within the neutral palette.
Blake's sheet music not only look great on the shelves, they also add some of his musical personality to the space.
Again, we added natural woven blinds to visually add height to the doors. We used our own simple iron drapery rods paired with Restoration Hardware drapery panels in a "Sand" linen, which compliment the heather gray tones in the rug and baskets.
The window treatments really add warmth and texture. I can't believe this cozy family room is the same space that we started with!
Draperies were also installed in the living room....
Not only do they give the room a finished feel, they also keep out the harsh west sun in the afternoon!
We used our iron rods with Restoration Hardware drapery panels in "Ivory" linen.
The natural woven shade was the final touch in the dining room!
Beth was just finishing a meeting when we arrived. It was great to see that she was making use of her Swedish pieces...
Inspired by a local shop, Beth used the drawers for holding her coffee sweeteners.
I can tell that Beth, Blake and their family feel really comfortable in their home. Anyone who walks into their home immediately gets a sense of Beth and Blake's personalities.
We are now officially done with their downstairs and are starting to brainstorm wonderful ideas for their master bedroom and Beth's office/guest room.
Stay tuned!
