the clive....

I'm taking it a little easy this week (fighting a cold in this 100 degree weather!), but I couldn't resist showing you our first completed Clive chair! 

I've been doing posts about Clive since the very beginning of his design as a card board cut out taped to our closet door...

 

Then he became a three dimensional frame...

 
 Now Clive is fully upholstered. We covered this first prototype in Home Depot drop cloth with plans to recover him in leather once we felt that the dimensions were just right. But I fell in love with the way Clive looked in drop cloth, so I'm "borrowing" him for my office :)

 

The curves of the Clive look great from the side as well.
 

Oh, and in case you are wondering what that is hanging on the door, it's a vintage English postman's purse that I use to keep my outgoing mail. It's one way to keep the clutter on my desk to a minimum!

 

Before I head off to take my vitamin C, I also want to thank 1st Dibs for the beautiful pictures they took of our featured items.

sunday shopping at the flea...

Most of my weekend was spent making cupcakes with Leila for our annual block party, but Steve and I did get a chance to quickly go to the Santa Monica Airport Flea Market this morning.

This vendor always has an interesting mix of European and Far East vintage pieces.

 

The red cricket balls in a big glass jar show that even the simplest items can make an impact when done on a large scale.
 

Again, collections are so much more interesting when displayed together. 

I bought the two old gold locks for the shop. I think they'll make interesting display pieces.

 An example of this vendor's wonderful Chinese art. 

I bought these Burmese textiles to add some rich autumn colors to the shop. 

 

A handmade gypsy violin came home with us.
 

Shimmering in the early morning sun, this silver display was quite a sight!

 

Once I read these trophies, I couldn't resist buying them. They are actually clown trophies. One of them is from The Senior Hobo Parade Class of 1922! They just made me smile.

 

A set of sweet vintage heart lockets from the 1920's would be so lovely framed in a shadow box.

 

Vintage millinery embellishments always catch my eye.
    

 

I also find beauty in the simplest things, like this group of "frogs" used for floral arrangements....

 

or industrial drawers with folding rulers.
 

My friend, Jenny from the Junk Girls also appreciates the beauty in every day objects.
  
 
 

Jenny's display of aging springs is a piece of art!
 

Jenny threw all of these random dice and game pieces on a large tray. Everyone who walked by felt compelled to touch them. 
 

Old portraits are one of my weaknesses. I always wonder what the subjects were thinking about while they were sitting there.
 

This ballerina is now hanging in my bathroom!
 

She has an impressionistic feel to her that I just adore.
   

Flea market shopping is one of my favorite ways to fill my morning (and my basket!).

potting bench...

My garden has been a blessing in my life. When things seem a bit overwhelming, I find that spending even just a half hour tending our new kitchen garden calms me down. This weekend, Steve and I are going to work on designing a small garden shed outside the french doors of our living room. Until it gets built, I've placed a small potting bench in that space. 

 

 I hope you have a wonderful weekend filled with the people you love and the activities that feed your soul.

girl's bed ideas...

It's so much fun designing with children. They have the most creative ideas and aren't as inhibited as adults to express their views no matter how crazy they may seem. I always tell my clients (no matter what their age) that there are no bad ideas when brain storming.

Recently I've had the honor of collaborating with several young ladies to create their dream beds. 

I gave my young client, Miss I, one of my new favorite books "Room for Children" by Susanna Salk. Miss I fell in love with this bed by Charlotte Moss. Because of the configuration and size of Miss I's room, this was the perfect inspiration for her bed.  

 We decided to do a simple off white linen against Miss I's pale pink walls. The off white compliments Miss I's existing Shabby Chic duvet and pillows. 

A small Rogers and Goffigon trim lines the edge of the canopy fabric. 

We added some Matteo Euro Shams that match the green in the duvet.  

 

We had the daybed slipcovered for easy washing.

At our first meeting, Miss C (Miss I's older teenage sister) showed me this picture from the Calypso Home website as the inspiration for her bed. She loved the mismatched pillows and the natural linen tufted headboard with the nail head detail.

 

I showed Miss C some of our Matteo bedding in Greige. She thought it was perfection. We bought extra yardage to make the head board. Because the bed is actually a little wider than the wall, we decided to keep the headboard slim and simple rather than making it with wings.

We painted the walls Farrow and Ball "Skimming Stone" and left the trim white.
 

Miss C bought a curly amethyst pillow and a shimmery silver pillow from Calypso Home to complete the look. Another darker eggplant colored pillow from Restoration Hardware adds an additional pop of color. 
   

Two flirty Matteo Tat Euro Shams add softness against the headboard.
