I know I should be over this by now, but every time I see a room like this I want to run. It is always a little daunting too see all of those empty shelves! So, here are some techniques I use to keep me from feeling overwhelmed.
1. Start with Books.
In this room, I decided to use leather books from one of my favorite resources.
Put the books on the shelves first, leaving room for display pieces.
2. Display Collections. My clients had a limited amount of items that they liked, but they did have a fondness for globes. Fortunately, we carry a bunch of different globes at the store, so we packed them up and brought them to the house.
3. For a calm effect, limit the color palette. The colors in this room are brown and camel with touches of aqua....
so we kept the accessories on the shelves in the same color palette.
4. Add some sparkle. To keep the shelves from looking to flat we add some mercury glass pieces.
5. Relax. Just put the stuff up there! You can always move it around (and you probably will).
