No, I didn't forget the "e" on the title of this post.

Our friend, Grant Kirkpatrick at KAA has designed a fantastic new 

sustainable non-site built home at an affordable price point. He created HOM.

It all started when Grant wanted to build a second home  in a remote area 230 miles away from where he lives. Here is what he created.

There are three different floor plans ranging from 1,000 to 3,600 square feet. You can buy the home as is or you can work with one of KAA designers to customize the plan to fit your needs. 

Tomorrow, I am off to West Week at the Pacific Design Center where KAA has built one of their HOM homes on site.  Being a designer, I know how much effort it takes to move an idea through the process and actually see it through to the end. I congratulate KAA for their amazing achievement!

a shingle tour

Thank you for being patient and waiting 5 days for the rest of the tour of this shingle home. This home was a collaboration between Steve and his friend Paul Morrow. Paul is one of the best general contractors in the city. His company, Morrow and Morrow builds custom homes as well as homes for sale. Since there was no client, Paul and Steve selected all of the finishes, hardware and lighting. The home was decorated by a staging company when the house was for sale.

There is nothing I like more than a traditional shingle home with white trim and shutters. The stone on the bottom of the facade as well as on the pillars of the fence is called High Desert. 

I like this image of the three carriage garage doors and the glass room with the cupola. 

This image gives you a sense of the space as you enter the home.  The Madagascar grass cloth on the entry walls really warms up the space. 

The paneled wainscot provides scale. 

This home has a very open floor plan. The family room is open to the kitchen and entry. It is a large space broken up into two different seating areas.

as the covered back porch. The wall of french doors allows the light to stream into the room.  Book cases are lit with library lights. 

School house ceiling fixtures illuminate the room as well as the white painted tin ceiling tiles. Two industrial pendants from Circa lighting are hung over the center island. 

The island has a butcher block top with a gray granite sink and surround. The bridge faucet is by Rohl. 

A view of the kitchen shows the two refrigerators, one with a cork board paneled front and the other with the chalk board paneled front. Steve designed the cabinets so that they feel like furniture pieces. The two hutches to the left have dark stained counter tops. The other counters are Calacutta slab.

Two wine refrigerators are on the bottom of the back hutch.

The gray granite looks beautiful with the stainless Wolf oven. 

The breakfast area has a lovely view of the back yard. 

On the side of the kitchen is the doorway to the mud room. The floor is multi colored blue stone.

The dutch door opens to the back yard. 

There are two rooms on the other side of the family room. This sitting room is off of the entry in the front of the house. 

I love windows when they go down almost to the floor. 

The powder room is on this side of the home as well. The wall paper above the bead board wainscot is from Farrow and Ball. 

Behind the sitting room is the alder paneled library. 

Let's go upstairs...

Book shelves line one side of the second story entry. The large sky light makes sure that the entry is always sunny and inviting.

Upstairs, there are several children's rooms...

and bathrooms with tiled wainscot. 

And of course my favorite glass room above the garage.  I am not too fond of the furnishings, but I can imagine designing a wonderful art studio here....

If we walk back to the stairway, we can enter the master bedroom suite. 

I love the white paneled ceiling. 

and the Calacutta marble fireplace. with the bookshelves on either side.

Off of the master bedroom is a small sitting room...

I have shown this bathroom in a previous post, but I felt it had to be shown again as part of the tour. It's so pretty!

The shower is Thassos marble. 

The man's paneled bathroom with a Crema Marfil shower and floor with brown marble mosaic accents. 

 

He also has a dark paneled closet.

 

The position of the pool allows for a nice grassy yard.

Next to the pool is an outdoor fireplace and kitchen, perfect for our warm California weather!

I was looking through my images for inspiration for a job I am starting and stumbled upon this home that Steve completed a few years ago.  Although I have shared some of the images of the bathroom and kitchen, I have never given you a tour of the entire home. I thought starting a tour of this home would be fun way to participate in Julia's Hooked on Fridays party by showing you why I am hooked on shingle style homes.

Steve always imagined that little glass tower above the garage would be used as an artist's studio. I love rooms that have windows on three sides.

Roll up garage doors look like carriage house doors. 

A black paneled front door with sidelights are traditional details for this style home. Let's go inside....

The door looks just as pretty in white on the inside. Nickel door hardware was purchased from Rejuvenation hardware. 

You can see all the way to the backyard from the entryway. Madagascar grass cloth wallpaper is used on the walls of the entryway. All of the trim is painted white. All of the paint is from Benjamin Moore's Historical color line. The floors are walnut.

This beautiful archway underneath the stairway leads to a small sitting room. 

The house was decorated by a staging company. I think they did a lovely job. 

The chandelier is from Circa lighting. 

You can enter the Alder paneled library from the sitting room or the living room.

The large comfortable family room has a beautiful view of the back yard. Antique wood barn beams were used on the ceiling. 

 

I am off to a seminar for the weekend, but I promise to continue the tour at the beginning of the week.

As some of you know, I am an early riser. I wake up around 4:00 in the morning. I can imagine most of you think I am a bit crazy, but with 3 children, 2 dogs, 1 husband, 1 shop, and about 10 clients I need those quiet early morning hours to get ready for my day. Most of the time I am able to keep up with everything, but this past week has been particularly hectic. So, I apologize if this post is a bit shorter than  most.

I have been spending some time focusing on our little shop in front of our studio.

With the help of Kate Downs at Burro Diseno, we have designed our Swedish furniture flyer to send out to our clients as well as fellow designers.

We have also been rearranging the shop to incorporate all of these new lovelies.

I like the way the Swedish pieces look in the shop mixed in with the industrial furnishings.

We put this 200 year old Swedish settee on top of an industrial table. Vintage leather suit cases are stored underneath next to an old clock face. 

All of these images were taken by the newest member of our design team, Kelsey.

I think she did a great job of capturing the feeling of our shop. The raw industrial space juxtaposed with the more detailed Swedish pieces really works for me.

The shop floors are white oak. We left them unstained and sealed them with a 

clear flat  sealer.

Most of our black painted Swedish pieces are in our window, which make them a bit of a challenge to photograph. I love combining these beautiful chest of drawers with old metal gears and film wheels. 

A vintage French educational poster is hung above one of our black chest of drawers with a collection of binoculars and magnifying glasses.

I really like the way this display looks. I think the neutral color palette of black, brown and nickel really works. Sorry for the incredible close up!!!

I also wanted to thank all of you (for and against!) who commented on my last post.

I couldn't make the advertising decision without you. I will let you know what I decide by next week. I just need a few more days to make my decision.
