Scenic wall paper is one of my many loves.
A beautiful dining room by Windsor Smith.
Michael Smith often uses scenic wall papers in his designs,
like this bedroom papered in a De Gournay design.
from the book Michael S Smith Houses
Last year when my clients suggested that they wanted to do a dining room papered in chinoiserie scenic wallpaper in their Georgian home, I was thrilled. This would be my first time doing anything like this, so the first thing I had to do was my research. I found several amazing resources for this type of wall paper that I would like to share with you.
Founded in 1898, the family run Gracie Studio has been making gorgeous scenic wallpapers that are look fantastic in contemporary or more traditional spaces.

Thad Hayes chose this more muted toned Gracie wallpaper in this lovely dining room.

Designer Dan Carithers used a sunny yellow Gracie wall paper in this dining room. It looks beautiful with all of the rich dark wood pieces in the room.

Headed by the former directors of De Gournay (I'm getting to them), Fromental was established in 2005. This British company designs both traditional and more contemporary scenic wallpapers.
Their Willow design is one of my favorites.

The Willow design comes in some amazing color ways...
pretty!
very pretty!
Another Fromental favorite is Chinese Sparrow. It is a more contemporary version
of more traditional Chinoiserie designs.
and look at these colors!
I saved the best for last...
Here is one of Fromental's more traditional Chinoiserie designs in the same fantastic
golden yellow.
Another fun Fromental design with in a light color way.
Located in Virginia, Paul Montgomery creates stunning hand painted murals, screens and wall coverings like this gold leaf wallpaper....
and this beautiful scene.
B.Mori is located in San Francisco and specializes in custom hand painted textiles imported from Europe and the Far East.
Here are some examples of their work...
Another superb company that I found is De Gournay.
De Gournay's wallpapers are based on 18th century Chinoiserie designs that
can be customized to compliment any color scheme. They specialize in reinterpreting these designs for more contemporary applications.

Once I had completed my research I met with my clients and let them make their decision. They fell in love with this De Gournay design...
I loved the finished product. The stunning Chinoiserie scene was the perfect back drop for their Dessin Fournir table and chairs in a deep brown stain. The carpet from Mansour picks up all of the colors in the wall paper.
I'd love to hear what you think about scenic wall paper. Do you love it as much as I do?
Have a fantastic weekend.
