A pinch worthy moment...seeing our home in Veranda Magazine!
On Monday Kelly from our shop called to tell me that a box of several copies of the July/August 2011 issue of Veranda Magazine arrived. On the top of the package was a hand written note from Veranda's Editor-in-Cheif Dara Caponigro thanking us for giving them our home to feature in Veranda. Pinch, pinch!
I was running around to meetings that morning, but fortunately Steve was able to rush into the shop to see the feature. I made him describe every page to me over the phone!
The main space is featured prominently in the article. Steve's paintings set the tone for the room.
I love Lisa Romerein's image of our Master bedroom closet. Everyone at Veranda was amazed that we turned a pair of Swedish doors into a full closet!
This is the final image of our 8 page feature. I still think of Joni every time I see our mirror. She spotted it during our shopping trip to Round Top.
This is only a preview of the feature! The article is beautifully written by Mario Lopez-Cordero. We spoke with Mario over the phone, but the conversation felt like a comfortable chat with an old friend.
Steve and I couldn't be more thrilled to be included in this issue of Veranda with our favorite designer, John Saladino's recent project on the cover!
Thank you to everyone at Veranda Magazine for this honor!
A few of my favorite Veranda women... Decoration and Design Editor Leslie Newsom, Editor of Decoration and Special Events Carolyn Englefield, Founding Editor Lisa Newsom, and Editor-in-Cheif Dara Caponigro.

This is WILD! Just this moment I "finished" reading my "VERANDA" magazine...and just "so pleased" to read about Oxnard!! I mean, it was just so surreal when I looked at the photos and then did a "double take" to see your home. Another, "ah-hah" moment. franki

I have to text my husband at O'hare right away to get me a copy to bring with him home to Stockholm, if I'm lucky I might have it on my desk tomorrow afternoon.
I wish you and your family a great trip to France and Belgium, you will adore it!

Hi Brooke, Congratulations a million times over!! WE do know how things evolve, but to have John Saladino be the cover feature when your powder room was inspired by his design aesthetic must be more than a simple coincidence. xoxo, Mary

Not surprised at all, Brooke. I'm not much of an imitator or overly obsessive follower of anyone, because as a designer, I consider myself unique, but if there was only one I could imitate, I'd choose you! (And your fabulously talented other half!)
Excited for you!

Brooke- Yes, the John Saladino home was stunning (and had that big budget- what spaces!), but your Oxnard home was the real star of the issue. Real. Clean. Collected. I'm amazed at how visually dramatic your spaces are, yet easy to live in too, which is a hard line to balance.
And the text was great, too. I would love to see a "before" of that fireplace. The way the rustic texture of stone is still seen underneath the white is so stylish and such a great backdrop.
I would have chose the image on page 99 for the cover!

Congratulations Brooke! The spread looks beautiful- I can't wait to see it!! I have worked with Lisa Romerein before and she is a wonderful photographer (and so nice)
I can't believe this, but I think you actually bought the Swedish shutters that I had a "hold" on a few years ago!! Did you get them in the Swedish shop in the back of "Lucca Antiques" on La Cienega??

Hi, Brooke. I spoke with you about my home in Carmel some years ago. I really enjoy your photos of Carmel homes. I am familiar with quite a few of them. I wanted to share with you the name of my favorite home accessories store in nearby Los Gatos. It's called BIANCO. Imagine creams and whites and soft grays as the palette for all kinds of home decor. She stocks my favorite line of Vietri dishware. Her complimentary gift wrap is beautiful & distinctive. At Christmas, the store is amazing! I'm always so excited to recieve a gift from this unique shop. Hope you get the chance to visit BIANCO and hope you love it as much as I do.

I was absolutely, positively elated when I opened my Veranda and found your stunning home- okay, I think I squealed;)! It is a gorgeous feature on your beautiful home and I loved how Steve's paintings popped on the pages. The story was great, the styling was great and the photography was great (Steve as architect, designer, artist and photog?!! you're killing me!) Such a talent the two of you- Congratulations on such a wonderful feature in one of my longtime favorite magazines (I've subscribed since I was probably 25 years old- it was my design bible in my early years;)

Of course everything begins with your relaxed, pulled together spaces, mixing high and low. The real magic is you, Steve, the kids and the chickens. Every time I talk about you with other bloggers, the universal comment is that you are amazingly approachable, sweet and generous. You can pinch yourself for talent, but your gift is your genuine love for people. There are climbers and there are "raisers." You and Steve are raisers. You sweep us all along with you. You mix your sweet little flea market find people with designers and media, in a fresh democratic way. For once, authenticity flies, and you guys are more of a movement than an institution.
Proud to know you,
Liz
