Like many little girls, since Leila was very young her favorite color was pink. When we went shopping, she would always pick out pink dresses and skirts. So when we first decorated her room, I wasn't surprised by her pink selections. Her bedding was pink. Her light fixtures were pink, and the pillows on her sofa were pink.
As Leila has grown, her style has changed. Pink is being replaced with other more "mature" colors.
Recently, Leila decided it was time for a change. Being a daughter of two visual people , the need to have her room reflect her personality is in Leila's genes. So for Leila's 10th Birthday we told her that she could redecorate her room.
We started with a trip to Anthopologie where Leila fell in love with this rug.
Inspired by one of the blues in her new rug, Leila chose Farrow and Ball "Blue Ground"...
which really transformed her room once the walls, the windows and the ceiling were painted.
She decided to keep the vintage light fixtures that took on a fresh new look against her turquoise walls.
She chose a goldenrod cotton velvet for the upholstery on her new sofa. The pillows and bedding were purchased from Anthropologie.
The wall color became a wonderful back ground for all of her artwork, displayed in white Pottery Barn frames.
Leila now has a cozy reading chair (upholstered in natural linen) and a fun patterned ottoman to put her feet on. She's thrilled to have her own desk that she doesn't have to share with her brothers!
Leila is so proud of her new room that she designed. Who knows... maybe she'll even keep it clean!

I just love that colour blue, if she chose that herself then you have one very talented young lady, because blues are so hard to get right - that room is divine!!!

Wow - what an adorable and chic room. I love everything about it - I have a ten year old daughter also who would be thrilled to have this haven. The framed artwork is so charming - and bridges the gap between little girl and tasteful tween. How sophisticated of her to have chosen that rug - she clearly has her parents' genes!

Hi Brooke, I think that Leila is on the road to developing a great eye. It's a charming room and so individual; perfect for those teenage years when girls want a separate space of their own.

Hi Brooke, Leila's room? Well, just incredible. Everything about it is gorgeous, and I'm sure she's having fun reading the comments -- so, Leila, great job! You've got "it"! Happy Birthday.

LEILA,
Happy Birthday! I cannot believe you are only 10 years old!! Your room impresses me more than many adult designers! It reflects a style that is all yours! That wall color is awesome! I love the pillows and ottoman you picked out, and of course the rug is totally cool!
What amazes me is how smart you are, and maybe this comes naturally, about making the room functional as well as fun. You could fit a whole slumber party in your room and everyone would have a comfortable place to hang out! The sofa looks really comfy, as if a friend could sleep over on it. And the alcove, if you have read Mr. McAlpine's new book, is the perfect place for intimate conversations with your best friends. I can just see you, sitting on your bed with a couple of close friends, talking in the future about the cutest guys in the class, or your favorite music and movies!
Enjoy your room Leila!!!

i'm hoping smaller will = smaller messes! thanks for some great inspriration!

Leila has better taste than most adults I know. The art work is eternal, she'll always have that for her children and grandchildren. 10 is my favorite age for girls.

This turned out so beautifully!
There's nothing more inspiring than a sophisticated child's lair filled with hope and plenty of room to go.
I adore the very euro juxtaposition of the more streamlined, modern elements with the quirkier, more boho-chic bits.
Bravo, bravo, this turned out better than I could've imagined.

I have been waiting to see part two of her room since your trip to Anthro, and it did not disappoint. Well done, Leila! Thought it was so sweet how the three of you did it together that day and charmed by your husband's sketches at lunch. Can't wait to do my daughter's room with her when she's 10! The paint color alone made a huge difference!! What a beautiful, beautiful room!! I LOVE how her bed is made into a daybed in that nook. Is that a full size bed or a twin?
I've bookmarked it for future inspiration for when we have the $ to really decorate my Lily's room!! Wonderful choices, Leila!!!

My almost 10 year old daughter would LOVE this room! The wall color is right up her alley. Must be a trend among 10 year old girls! I told her to hang in there for another year or so with the pinks and greens, but secretly, I'm dying to change it!
It can be hard to know when to make the leap (will the "tween" preferences last for enough years to make it worth it?), but you and your daughter have done a great job!
Xo,
Linsey
P.S. My daughter wants a velvet cushion for her window seat instead of my go-to fabric choice: linen. I haven't found a good one yet (for a reasonable price). Any ideas?
Posted by: LLH Designs | October 26, 2010 at 07:32 PM
Brooke,
The room looks amazing. I have a question because I see this from time to time with designers and as a designer I like to do paint the trim and base boards a white or alterative color. I see you did all the same color on the window trim and base boards. Was this something you decided or your daughter and/or part of your design philosophy? (probably spelled wrong - it's late I'm on the East Coast.

Wow, Leila! I am so impressed with the design of your room. My daughters (18 and 13) love it, too. I wish you could fly to Alabama and help my daughters decorate their rooms. All three of us love Anthropologie, and the rug is a great choice as your inspiration piece. The pillows and ottoman are adorable and quirky at the same time. Amazing job, hon!
