This is the question that I am obsessing about these days.
I was always a matcher. It was safe, and it looked good.
In my bathrooms in Santa Monica all of my faucets and lighting are chrome.
But when I designed my bathroom in my home in Channel Islands Harbor, I started to wonder what things would look like if everything didn't match...
In this bathroom I used Waterworks nickel hardware, but the light fixtures and the mirrors were antique gold.
Again, the pewter tub in this bathroom has nickel fixtures, but the sconces that I found in Venice are gold as are the frames of the botanicals. I actually liked the more relaxed feeling of using more than one type of finish in the bathroom. So I started wondering how much could you mix?
As many of you know, I am obsessed with this powder room in John Saladino's Villa. He uses an aged bronze fountain faucet with a small chrome handle.
And then I saw Jill Brinson's amazing home in the latest House Beautiful...
The faucets appear to be oil rubbed bronze. The light fixtures are antique nickel, and the bathtub hardware...
appears to be polished nickel. And it looks fantastic. By using different finishes on each piece, her bathroom has a collected antique feel to it.
That is exactly the feeling that I am trying to achieve in my powder room. So I am going to use...
my old fountain spout above my antique marble sink.
and my crazy gilded antique mirror that Joni found for me at Marburger.
I'm meeting with my contractor, Tom Roberts, tomorrow to see how this will come together (poor Tom doesn't know what to make of me!).
Since I'm going beyond my comfort zone, I'd love to get your opinion.
