As I wait (im)patiently for my console to arrive, I am trying to move forward with the rest of our powder room re-model.
Many of you might remember this "Before" image of this side of my powder room. A big blank beige wall and our dog kennel. How attractive.
This is the same wall. We added a wall by the door so that this area is separate from the sink area of the powder room. The commode will be on this side as well.
This image shows you the new entry we have created to this area of the powder room. We are going to use these old pine shutters as a pair of doors to close it off, when needed. The shutters are actually the same width, but the one on the left is folded in this image.
Here is a picture of my shutters, now in place. The doorway will be made a little lower this week so the pivot hinges (actually, we couldn't find any hinges that would work, so we used socket wrenches!) will be hidden and buried in the drywall.
I skirted the bottom in my favorite natural linen and picked up the same grey color in my baskets.
I plan on keeping the color palette for this room very neutral. The hydrangeas pick up the color in my pine shutters. I plan on hanging some botanicals on the walls, which will also be in this color family.
Of course, we couldn't forget the pups! Since they only use this doggy bed when we are away from the house, I put it under the curtain. Being den animals by nature, I know they are going to love it.
I plan on including this in Between Naps on the Porch "Metamorphosis Monday" post tomorrow. I really think we transformed this room!
I'd love to hear what you think so far. My console should be here in the next couple of weeks. We're hoping to have this room done by Thanksgiving. Keep you fingers crossed!

Brooke

Brooke, it's perfect! Look at all that added storage space you now have.
I love when my hydrangeas turn that color late in the season, are these real? Next year I am going to find out how to dry them so I can have that clean, fresh, spring, "Velvet and Linen" look all year long.

Brooke, what a clever use of space and look how pretty it is. I love, love the pine doors, the patina is beautiful and the texture in the baskets is another perfect choice. I always love seeing what you do in your design process, it is fun watching it unfold. I will be sure and go over to Susan's tomorrow. Kathysue

Fabulous and always wonderfully inspirational!!! As I am doing an old town hall as our home and at the moment, it is becoming a bear to get through. I therefore, LOVE to visit your blog everyday and see what new and inspiring ideas you have. One question~do you accumulate "treasures" in your travels that you will use in projects (you may not know exactly what for yet, but it has to come home with you!) and if you do, where do you keep them??? I should have the space but, once all the construction started, my spaces soon were gone!!! Then, hard to explain all the "treasures" to everyone. ; Silly me!! No, really, do you do the same and if so, do you have an organized way to store them until they find a home?
Merci, Merci for the wonderful inspiration and love that new space!!!

Hi Barbara.
I am fortunate to have my shop now. It gives me a place to keep the treasures I find.
Sometime they end up in my home, sometimes in a client's home, and other times we just sell
them to someone who comes into the store.

Love it! The shutters are gorgeous! The colour palette is perfect. I find it so hard to stick to a muted palette; I always crack and add stronger colour. I find it's much braver to avoid adding the obvious; blues, reds etc. Great job!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend,

Hi B.
I know. Sticking to a color palette can be a challenge.
We'll have to see if color starts creeping in!

Brooke,
Loving your powder room. Where are those beautiful gray baskets from? I'm afraid you will tell me they were "found" a while ago. If not, are they in your store? I want some.
Posted by: Jenny | November 08, 2009 at 10:17 AM
Oh, Brooke - it looks wonderful! I love the shelves - how did you get them to look like plaster? are they just covered in that nu-cote - (how do you spell it???)
I love the way the shelves look like they were molded out of plaster.
Just beautiful - the baskets, the hydrangeas, the skirt!!!! can't wait to see the end results. between this and your office - I'm not sure which I like better?!!?

***** HOW??? H*O*W do you "DO" IT, Brooke???*****
Every project you approach, every space you touch, is soooooooo beautifully "new" & simply elegant, in it's own UNIQUE, glorious understated & NON-pretentious way...... it defies the "norm" & makes sooooo many of us just want to see more n' more! (Then again, I fully realize you can't work 24/7 JUST to please those of us who are a bit "greedy"! Grins!)...
Truly, I just can't get over it, Brooke!!! Here I am, looking at a PARTIALLY DONE POWDER ROOM and holding my beathe til I get to see it all "Brooked Up"??!?!?! ~~~ My friend, you really SHOULD/MUST somehow, somewhere, FIND A WAY to WRITE "that" BOOK... Write, get it published, go to your first book-signing and those books will be GONE with the WIND!!!
Big hugs,
Linda *****

Hi Joni.
Yes, the shelves are California One Kote.
I loved the idea of just having this all white room with texture and interest from just the baskets, linen and botanicals.
I'm so glad you like it!

Hi Brooke,
Beautiful colors you've chosen and I love those old shutters that will become doors! This is really going to be wonderful...just like the rest of your gorgeous home.
About the silver...here's a link that may help: http://www.beverlybremer.com/caring_for.php. The link is to a care of silver article written by Beverly Bremer, a really nice silver shoppe in Atlanta. They say it's fine to use a dishwasher as long as you follow a few rules/restrictions about the detergent you use, don't wash the knives, etc... I just wash my silver by hand using a good liquid dishwashing detergent and hot water...it just doesn't get quite as hot as the dishwasher, which is supposed to actually be better for the knives. I'm wondering if the detergent you use may have lemon in it or if your silver is coming in contact with something else in the dishwasher...something stainless. Because if you are using it everyday, you shouldn't need to ever polish it. Hope the link helps solve that mystery. :-)

It's coming along very nice! Where did you find the pretty baskets? And the baskets that you put your printer in by your desk? They really look good.
Posted by: Bonnie | November 09, 2009 at 03:28 AM
Hi Kathy.
Thank you so much!
I have never shipped my hydrangeas. I'm not sure if there is a way to do that without
harming them. They are pretty delicate.
Has anyone else ever shipped hydrangeas successfully?

what to add to the above comments brooke other than another YES! to your aesthetic, purely gorgeous! the old shutters add such depth and interest. love your style
drying hydrangea's is easy, i even grow many shrubs in my garden purely for cutting.
-late summer/early fall is the ideal time for cutting
-when the heads have both great color and feel like crepe paper cut, leaving a 12" stem. thru-out the season when you put your open hand cupped over the flower head it is very soft. but late season when you do the same they have the texture of crepe paper.
-place the hydrangeas in a vase without water. do not crowd. in a few days you will have perfectly dried hydrangeas. hope that helps!

Love the shutters...really pretty and the "one kote" stuff is so amazing, I've got to try some of it. Your office looks so great by the way, very bright and airy, a really nice space to work in I"m sure.
I have a good resource for hydrangeas: dried flowers R us. Its on the web and you can get a box of 50 shipped direct. They have arrived in perfect condition and are excellent quality, lots of colors too!

Love the baskets- such a very soft color. and a great use of space. I may need to copy this =)

Hi Leslie.
Yes, we are talking the the tools!
We couldn't find anything else that worked. We put these spring
loaded dowels in the doors and then screwed the socket wrench into the drywall. It's crazy, but it worked!
