Steve and I are off to Atlanta tomorrow. This trip came about in a very bloggy way. My new friend, Angela from WA and I were talking on the phone. Although she calls herself Angela from WA, she is actually a Southern gal and her descriptions of Atlanta in her gorgeous Southern drawl were too much for me to resist. Next thing I knew, we had planned our whirl-wind trip. Arrive in Atlanta Thursday night. Scott's Antique Market on Friday. a tour of the city and a visit to Mrs. Howard's with Veranda's Leslie Newsom on Saturday.....
Leslie and her mother, Lisa Newsom, editor of Veranda Magazine (the magazine also known as my design bible) were nice enough to take time out of their recent family vacation in Santa Barbara to visit us at our home in Channel Islands. I couldn't have been happier! What could be better than meeting two women who have shaped my idea of great design?
So, I'm very excited about our trip, but I also have an insane fear of flying. I know, I've heard it all: Flying is the safest way to travel.... Nothing helps. Poor Steve has permanent scars on his arms from my clenching. I am truly surprised that any airlines will let me on a flight after the last flight (a little turbulence, a lot of crying and screaming...).
Anyway, to keep me from thinking about tomorrow's flight, I thought I would do a post on another bathroom that we finally finished.
The Ann Sacks iridescent mosaic tile is amazing. We used industrial fixtures from
Liza Sherman for the ceiling lights.
The bath is on the other side of the bathroom.
Love that lavender velvet seat cushion. I know it's hard to tell, but the tile picks up all of the colors in the room, the citrus green on the walls, the lavender of the towels and glass knobs, the colors in the rubber duckies (well maybe not, but they are awfully cute).
So, I promise to post from Atlanta. Wish Steve luck with surviving the flight and all of that arm squeezing.
xo

Brooke,
I know your flight will go well, I am so sad our schedules don't jive...but next time for sure! I love the finished product on this bath and the previous post. I am with you...that bath is divine, I wouldn't mind jumping in myself. As always, what you do is so elegant and fresh...love the color palette in the master bdrm!
Be safe,,,blessings..

Hi Brooke, I also have the "airplane hee bee gee bee's" so here is my trick. I always bring a busy work project that I have been putting off. On our last trip to Hawaii, I reworked our entire address book, put it all in my lap top and updated everything, including birthdays and important notes. Sounds crazy but it seems to work!
love the bath in your post!

Another fantastic bathroom design :-) Love the skylight and those amazing tiles in the shower and around the tub. And being a purple-lover, of course I love the bench cushion :-)
Every bathroom should have a rubber ducky :-)
Hmmmmm, crying and screaming through turbulence, eh?? Seeing as you can't prevent or avoid turbulence, you may as well enjoy it!! Just try to think of it as a fun amusement park ride :-) Or, drink a whole lot of those little bottles of booze and you won't even notice the bumps!! ;-)
Fly safe, and don't forget to give us some updates from Atlanta :-)
Kelly
P.S. Good luck to Steve -- hope he has a strong arm!! ;-)

You are adorable! So fun to get the 'human' side of the famous and high-end designer that you are!!
Have a great trim and I look forward to reading about it (love the picture of you by the way!) Beautiful.

Have a great time!! You are human.... we all have fears of one kind or another; yours is simply more visible. When my children were young, I was afraid of flying also. And am still paranoid about heights. When I have to go over a freeway overpass or bridge, I (1) pray; (2) start singing; (3) practice yoga deep breathing--the more I focus on my breath, the less I focus on that hole in my gut.

Beautiful bathroom! I love that little bench. I'm right there with you re: the flying. You are a wonderful example to your kids of facing your fears -- your nervous, but still do it! You will be safe, I'm sure of it. Your trip sounds delightful!
Take good care, Cathy

You will love Mrs. Howard!! Jaw-droppingly gorgeous!
And sleep is what I recommend for flying!! That's what I do!

one word... Xxanex! I think that's how you spell it. I don't even take Tylenol, but for flying I take 1 Xxanex, and I'm good to go. Do I love to fly now... NO! But at least my fear doesn't stop me. Also they (X) don't make you feel any weird side effects, just calm enough to get me on the plane without all the ill feelings you described. Safe travels, I'll be thinking of you all day tomorrow and will send smooth flying wishes your way.

Hi,
Thanks for your comments !! They mean a lot to me :)
Oh, poor you with the flying fear. It's a luck if you have Steve beside you to lean on.
I think that the bathroom is great !! The mosaic tile looks amazing and as you said, takes up all the other colors.
Have a nice and safe trip to Atlanta !

* Eeeegaaads, Brooke! Those tiles are deeeeliciously & sinfully L*A*V*I*S*H~~~ yes, QUITE sexy, even w/ rubber duckies present (or MAYBE even BECAUSE they're present?!?!)~
As a former stewardess (back in "thoooose days"!), I can assure you that just a lil' (oh, heck, even ALOT!) of the bubbly, along w/ you n' Steve discussing how you met, fell in love, etc., will ensure a MUCH QUICKER, n' most certainly MORE DELIGHTFUL, flight... you'll be back on terra firma BEFORE Y' KNOW IT, and you're "kid-free" for a few days~~~ A perfect chance to relive a lil' of your HONEYMOON again, too!!!
What a T*R*E*A*T for you both!!! Enjoooooy!
Hugs,
Linda in AZ *
(P.S. DARRRRLING PIC of you gals, ESPECIALLY with the water in the background!)

Enjoy your flight! Maybe you'll be inspired by the clouds as you look out the window.
Mark Malkoff recently stayed on a plane the entire last month to try to get over his fear of flying (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mark-malkoff/135-flights-111000-miles_b_228025.html). I know you won't be doing that, but it was fun tracking his adventures on Twitter. :)
I've been a reader/lurker of your blog since early this year. I always love the photos. :)

Good luck with the flying! Enjoy Atlanta! I've been posting on a few of our in-town beauties (houses) and they would do so well with your touch.
Perhaps next time around, I can have you consult on our home!

Brooke,
I too, have a fear of flying. I constantly watch the flight attendants face to see if they look worried or upset about anything. I pray a lot when I'm worried on the flight. Two years ago, we had a horrible flight coming home from NYC- there were storms the whole way home. At one point I surely thought that I was either going to faint or stand up and start screaming and someone would have to slap me. Thankfully, we landed safely, but I still hate it every time! I will be thinking of you and hoping you have a smooth flight!
Best,
Angie

You lucky thing. I've been to Atlanta and we stayed at the Omni Hotel. Our children were a lot younger then, but while my husband was at an exhibition, I took them on the CNN tour and to the Coca Cola museum then we went and explored the Georgia area. Stone Mountain Park, The fenicular railway and the museums of The Civil War, Gone With The Wind. There is soooo much to do there. I have only mentioned a few things that we did. Bon Voyage. XXXX

found this post via another blog. had to click when i saw the heading about flying. i hate it too. paired with motion sickness, flight day is a day i dread. probably by the time you read this, you are safely in atlanta. i consider myself a southern gal (spent half my life there). i now live in seattle. i so do miss the south. have a wonderful visit. and beautiful bathroom!

You are not alone in your fear of flying. I am in that club, too. My husband and I flew from TX to Atlanta this past January. It was a very important event for him so I went. I had not flown in many years. I kept my head stuck in a book and did great. Hope you have a safe, fun, smooth and non-frightening trip!

Ok, you're gonna think I'm nuts, but you might want to have your thyroid checked. I was never especially thrilled to fly 3 hours to go skiing with my husband and son..but over the years I became reallllly fearful...to the point of crying and being REAL upset if there was turbulence. Then, I found out I was hypothyroid...started on Synthroid and now...flying is no big deal. Hypothyroidism make MOUNTAINS out of molehills. When I read your post...made me remember that time in my life...don't know if this helps but wouldn't hurt to just get it checked...it's a simple blood test.
