I should explain the title of this post. My son, Nick is the middle child, or as we like to call him, "The Creamy Center". Like most middle kids, he is the quiet one and asks for very little. Because he is so undemanding he often gets pushed aside as Steve and I try to meet the constant needs of my other two. Even his bedroom was filled with Charlie's hand-me-down beds desk, etc... So, when Nick asked if he could re-decorate his room I was only happy to help (not only because he never asks for anything, but because I thought it would be a great way for us to connect).
I treated Nick like any other client. I asked him the following questions:
1. What did he want to do in his room?
Answer: Hang out with his friends. Play his saxophone.
2. What colors does he like?
Answer: Blue and Grey
3. Are there any other needs?
Answer: A place to put his books, and glass collection. A room that looked more
like him.
Here is what Nick's room looked like "BEFORE"
"AFTER"
We painted the walls Artist's Studio by Ralph Lauren. A nice grey blue (Linda!).
The wainscot, ceiling and wood wall stayed white.
Nick loves (is crazy for, lives and breathes) football. So, we selected bedding from PB Teen that fit right into our color scheme and our football theme. The PB Teen storage beds are perfect to throw all of his junk in so the room doesn't look too cluttered.
The two baskets work as a coffee table as well as more storage.
BEFORE
AFTER
We found these football prints at the Strawberry Festival a couple of weeks ago. I framed them in inexpensive stainless steel frames.
We also bought a Mitchell Gold navy blue linen slip covered couch and two
to give Nick and his friends a place to hang out.
BEFORE
Although Charlie usually sleeps in Nick's room, he also has his own space in the loft above.
AFTER
We bought a grey shag rug from Crate and Barrel. It matched the walls perfectly.
We painted the top of the stairs Artist's Studio as well.
The school house light worked well on the sloped ceiling.
We stained his old book case to match his new beds.
The book shelf gives him a place to keep his glass collections.
We also hung two cork boards above for hat storage etc....
We refinished the boys' pine closet to match the rest of the wood pieces in the room.
I bought a set of navy blue sheets and had my upholsterer turn them into panels for the doors.
Nick still liked Steve's old Tonka trucks, so we left them on top of the closet.
Dare we go up to Charlie's room?
We let Charlie do his thing up here. He put his Mad Magazines on the walls....
as well as his guitars and posters.
Both of my boys love their rooms and feel that they reflect their personalities.
As an interior designer, I have two more satisfied clients!
